Originally from ticket #33.
my name is Michael Buijsman and I want to create a site for our small photography business in the Netherlands. We bought the Tripod theme because it looked good and seemed to work satisfactorily according to some of your clients. But ever since I installed the software, I have nothing but trouble. After two weeks of trying there is still not even the slightest shape of a site created. So I started to work step by step following the documentation guide that was delivered by your company. But already in chapter 2.1 (default templates) I have problems because I cannot edit any elements. There is just no screen shown as indicated in your documentation.
What am I doing wrong here for this is so basic that there must be a simple explanation for this. I cannot find anything on any forum and I followed the installation steps exactly so that seems to be ok.
Can you help please ?
Please make sure you are looking in theme options -> Templates, there you can create and edit them http://i.imgur.com/pZeqU0K.png
Here is a presentation of the template builder https://cosmothemes.zendesk.com/entries/24065526-Template-builder-demo
Here is how to create a Gallery https://cosmothemes.zendesk.com/entries/24067257-How-to-create-a-Gallery-in-Tripod
first of all, thank you for your quick response. I do understand all that you are saying, because it aligns with the documentation. My problem however is that I can not use the template builder As shown in the image that you have sent ( http://i.imgur.com/pZeqU0K.png ). I can see that screen but once I click on the <edit elements> I get an almost empty screen. I would love to show you but don't know how to make screen shots on my apple mac. The problem is also not browser related for I get the same situation when using firefox. I am using latest versions of both. So I can not make a template, therefore cannot make any layout or page so I cannot use Tripod.
So the question is, howcome the <edit elements> does not work with me ?
Thank you for your assistance and patience in this matter, which is really frustrating me for I believe that the software, once working properly on my machine, is really powerful.
Thanks and hoping for again a quick response
Hello Cornel, you are a true professional. Indeed the problem was related to the plugins installed. I deinstalled them and now I can see the menu's again. Does this imply that I cannot use any plugins or is this a matter of trial and error?
Another question; I want to use the logo of our small company in the menu, but place it centrally. When I do that, the logo is blown up to enormous proportions, this does not happen when I create two elements next to each other on the same line, logo and main menu. What am I doing wrong ?
A final question to you; I do not understand the way the layout option works. I understand menu's, pages, templates and elements but I fail to understand how I can use layouts. The only thing I can think of is that the software understands what type of information is shown and uses the layout to reflect how it should be presented. Or am I wrong here ?
Thanks for the great help, I am confident that we can go live with studioanouk.nl shortly.
you can use any plugin which does not conflict with our theme. And I can say that usually it's a plugin issue, because our themes are design by all standards.
About the logo... try to use a smaller version of the logo - your present logo has 2243px X 2243px in size, so it should be highly decreased. And the loading time will be improved.
Another method would be using CSS, but... why?!
Layouts are "default WP pages". It "tells" WP what template should print out on different places. Like, layout FRONT PAGE will pint the template that is choosed there, so every time you'll access Front Page, you'll access that template. The same for search page, archive pages and so on.
Let me know if you're still confused. Cheers!
sorry. I feel such an ass.....I do try to understand but your answer still does not fully land with me. You are saying that layouts are default WP templates. So can I assume that layouts are the same as templates with that difference that templates are designed by you or me and that layouts are designed by WP ?
If so, I don't understand the documentation guide that came with the template, this clearly states that once a template has been defined you have to assign to a layout. Or it should be that all data on the site comes through the layouts of WP that one can change through assigning a different template which represents the data at user's will.
I will give it a try man. Thanks for all the help so far....
yes, it's almost about that - in Layouts we say what information should print out. Let's say I want a list of latest posts and a grid with news on my front page. Also I want 2 sidebars on the left and on the right. So, I go in Templates, create a new Template - SuperMainPage, then I will add 2 rows: one choosing Latest Posts element, 2nd - Category -> News. Then I will choose List view for posts and Grid for News. Okay, my template will do exactly what I need, but where?! Here it comes the Layouts. In Layouts, I will choose Front Page , then SuperMainPage as a template. Also here I want 2 sidebars.
The same is for e.g. Search layout. You can create a template with a list of items, then append it to Search layout. So everytime somebody searches something, it will also see your list of items.
By default, Layouts are using Default row. But, beside this row, you can add other super-crazy info. It's up to your imagination...
